BACKGROUND: Condom demo is prime activity under condom promotion strategy. Direct impact indicator for condom demos and resulting correct use condom not available.
METHODS: When commercial sexual encounter sites visited, used condoms sighted in the dust bins/ open spaces. The reason is toilets are not used by common man of India and so no flushing of used condoms. From this accidental find a research developed; 40 Commercial Sex Workers who practice in Special Lodges of a town, selected on a random basis; 20 Experimental Group (EG) and 20 Control Group (CG). To EG, visual condom demos conducted which ended putting knot in the condom before disposing. To CG, only information about condom usage provided. Dustbins containing used condoms after every encounter from the rooms of CSWs collected, dumped in a designated site and inspected for 10 days.
RESULTS: 878 used condoms identified, 446 EG condoms and 432 CG condoms. Of 446 EG, 254 knotted condoms (56.5%) and CG 52 knotted (12%) noticed. Conclusion Concluded that the number of knotted condoms spotted among used condoms is a direct indicator to measure correct usage of condoms. This indicator could be utilized in possible Indian scenario.
