Description of Content: This role-play is based on sex workers experiences of struggling to sell sex in red light districts in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The scene opens in a brothel that three drunken clients walk into who want to buy sex but do not want to use condoms. Through the support of other sex workers in the brothel and surroundings the women demanding condom use are saved from a potentially life-threatening situation and are able to avert intervention by the corrupt and inept police force. Objectives: Confronting issues related to alcohol abuse, gender based violence, police corruption and condom use this role play will show how in Cambodia sex workers are vulnerable and powerless which leaves them little room in standing up for their rights or for successful negotiation for condom use. When this cocktail of oppression is mixed with drunken male behaviour, sex workers must stand tall in declining sex services without condoms, as often these demands are met with the threat of or actual sexual assault. Unable to turn to the corrupt and exploitative authorities for support for fear of arrest, illegal detainment and/or confiscation of earnings, sex workers have started building bonds of solidarity; coming together to support each other in threatening or explosive situations they might find themselves in. This role-play shows how some sex workers are struggling against the social order to stand strong and demand condom use to protect themselves and how, after decades of being divided and weak, sex workers are starting to support one another and find strength in unity.
