John Paul Slum Development Project, Pune, India
ISSUE: John Paul Slum Development Project (JPSDP) implementing TIP on the Pune-Ahmednagar-Highway linking all direction of the country. Going to CSWs is routine practice of Truckers, they feel would die of accident any time, hence an eventual death due to AIDS is less threatening.
DESCRIPTION: Truckers give less importance to Male-Out-Reach-Workers,feel listening to them is wasting time/energy,we have employed Female-ORWs and have overcome such problem, F-ORWs impart Behaviour Change Communiction(BCC) and Knowledge to protect them from STD/HIV which is widely accepted and large number of Trucker's STD problems are solved at JPSDP's STD-Clinic, Counselling and partner Notification is done, CSWs on the Highway are trained on STD/HIV/AIDS, Local Truckers with STD Complaints are requested to bring their spouses for treatment and Counselling, Few Truckers diagnosed HIV and their pregnant spouses are referred for PMTCT, Guides, Mechanics and Ex-Drivers are made Peer/Volounteers and Trained and involved in the Project. Lesson learned: This is only kind of Project run by F-ORWs in India, 'n' number of NGOs from State/Abroad have visited to see the innovative work which yield a best result. Recommendation: Partners Notification and BCC is important along with Treatment.
