Background : HIV epidemics, the most serious health problem in India, having more than 5 million infected patients. The presence of Sexually transmitted disease (STD) increases the risk of HIV by 4-8 times. The Objectives were to diagnose the HIV positive patients attending STD clinic and evaluate the efficacy of treatment. Methods : A multidepartmental study conducted in patients attended the OPD of Skin & STD. 2053 patients, both male and female, between age group of 12 to >50 years, during Jan.2000 to Dec.2003, diagnosed with STDs were screened for HIV. 208 patients were diagnosed HIV positive. Patients' informed consent and Ethical clearance were taken. HIV positive patients were treated with HAART and OIs drugs, were followed up at 0, 6, 12 months intervals (CD4 Count, HIV-1 viral load). Data were collected and analyzed using ANOVA statistics. Questionnaires were asked at the end. Results : Out of 2053 patients (male/female:1736/317), 208 patients were diagnosed HIV positive. In these 28(13%) were of age<15 years, 65(31%) of 15-24 yrs, 80(40%) of 25-34 yrs, 18(9%) of 35-44 yrs, 17(8%) of >44 yrs age. The most common OIs found were TB(140), Candidiasis (120), gastroenteritis (90), PCT (80), meningitis (50) & others. All Patients treated were shows good response to treatment, but unable to cope with adverse reactions of many drugs. Conclusion : Increasing in the incidence of HIV positive patients despite the combative efforts of Care centre shows the increasing risk of HIV/AIDS from the high risk group to general population. Though the combination of HAART with Anti-TB drugs is an daunting task, and unavailability of combination pills like Rifamate/ Rifater/Rifapentine, the costlier drugs to poor patients make their life in Jeopardy! Thus combination pills will be provided to these centres at low prices and awareness program, use of reminder and practical supports given to them to eradicate the deadliest disease of century.
