Collecte of used blades from barber shops in District 2 in Vogan-Togo.

BACKGROUND: Most of time people have being going to barbering shop to cut their hair or to shave. Sometime barber has being using the same blade for 2 or 3 persons. This can contribute to the spreading of the virus. OBJECTIVE: To collect the used blades from barbering shop (saloons) for the reduction of the spread of the HIV/AIDS amount the barbering shop's users.

METHODS: Identification of 50 saloons. Training of 25 leaders (selected)on BCC. Setting up of focus-groups for monthly meeting. Confection of collecting boxes for used blades. Distribution of boxes to the saloons. Collection of the boxes each month for incineration or burning. Survey for the action...

RESULTS: From February 2002 to November2003,1054 collections were made and incinerated or burnt of the contents of boxes. During the period survey among the population was done to know whether the same blade is used for 2 or 3 persons. The answer was NO

CONCLUSION: Users reported that they are satisfied by the services given in the barber shops which they have being using. From this ALLIANCE RUBAN ROUGE is looking to set up this type of project in other 2 districts of the country for the next coming year
