ISSUES: The Rapid spread of HIV in India has been attributed to factors like High Risk Behaviour, Inter-State migration in search of employment, low level of literacy, presence of STDs & gender disparity. All these factors have contributed to a Rapid increase in no. of cases being reported. Emergence & Re-emergence of a host of OIs aggravates the already existing infections & put considerable strain on already over stretched care-settings. There is a need to outline trends observed in OIs in AIDS cases reported so as to use resources judiciously & plan strategies effectivily. Descrition: Complete profile of AIDS cases including age, sex, profession, mode of acquisition, presenting signs & symptoms, presence/absence of OIs were recorded & compiled over a period of time.

LESSONS LEARNED: As regards presenting signs & symptoms, out of 915 AIDS cases reported till Oct.03, 64.70% had fever,72.79%-weight loss,44.59%-Chr.cough,32.79%-Diarrhea,24.15%-Lymphadenopathy,16.72%-T. B. (13.99%-Pulmonary,1.09%-miliary,0.55%-abdominal),21.53%-candidiasis&28.42%-skin manifestations. As in other countries where epidemic is in an advanced stage, in India also the infection has percolated from High Risk Behaviour population to general population. The state is facing a challenge of a dual epidemic of AIDS & T. B.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Close integration with Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme at state & local level, ensuring availablity of best practise guidelines at district hospitals & that they are put in practice as adequate training provided to overcome/reduce OIs.,appropriate drugs for treating OIs provided in adequate quantities., safe sexual practices, increase in awareness amongst general population still remains the main stay in control of HIV/AIDS epidemic in the state of Rajasthan. Study of Proportionate Prevalence of Opportunistic Infections helps in planning effective care for HIV/AIDS patients.
