Community based Care and Support to PLHAs: Experiences from One Urban Area in China.

OBJECTIVE: To summarize and analysis the experiences and lessons from the community based care and support for the PLHAs in Guiyang City of Guizhou Province, and to provide strategies on community based care and support for the PLHAs in urban areas.

METHODS: Based on the situation in Guiyang, strategies have been developed and implemented on leadership development, mass media moblization, multi-sector involvement, PLHAs' self-help group and community based care and support networks establishment, designed to promote promote the people in the community to care and support PLHAs.

RESULTS: Improved perception and awareness on HIV/AIDS of the mass media and the whole community through the project activities of community based care and support fot the PLHAs. The number of people seeking VCT people has increased significantly. Some PLAWs have been accepted by their own families. At the same time, PLHAs have changed their attitude for involving in care and support activities and providing their suggestions and opinions. Conclusion People's KAP on HIV/AIDS in the community could be improved and discrimination to the PLHAs reduced through community based care and support for PLHAs. However, this is just pilot project, which leaves problems and issues for further study.
