Effect of group education on men's participation in preventive methods of AIDS and family planning.

Introduction: AIDS is not only as a major health problem but an emergency complicated social and economical issue. Education of effective methods on personal protection, counselling and social support are among the effective interventions to fight against AIDS. Free group discussion on values, health and sexual problems and society can actually affect personal potentialities to decrease susceptibility against AIDS and populational problems.

METHODS: This is a quasi experimental research carried out in residentional town of Isfahan refinery. The main goal was to define the effect of group education on men`s participation in AIDS preventive methods and family planning. Firstly, 46 samples were selected and then primary tests were carried out to define the men`s knowledge and their spouses` from preventive methods to AIDS and family planning through questionnaires. Then group education was held for one month. In the end,post education exams were carried out by checklists and questionnaires two months after workshops. The data were analyzed by statistical tests in SPSS software.

RESULTS: The findings showed that subjects` knowledge on AIDS preventive methods and family planning before education was 19.41 while after that it was 29.37. These values were for the spouses as 20.6 and 23.39 respectively. Pair-t test showed a significant difference in each case (p=o.oo1). The findings also showed that although none of the subjects` families used AIDS preventive methods and family planning before education but after education,78% of them were under the cover of these programs. Discussion: According to the findings,it was known that the men participating in the research had got enough knowledge regarding educational AIDS preventive and family planning classes and transfered their knowledge to their spouses. They have also covered their families with family planning and taken male AIDS preventive techincs.
