AIDS related knowlege of high school students in Astara city from Iran.

BACKGROUND: The present study is a descriptive study and it's purpose is to survey knowlege of high schools students about AIDS in Astara.

METHODS: In this study 639 students from different high schools in urban and rural area randomly were chosen. The data collection tool was questionaire which covered demographic data and was designed to measure the level of knowlege about the nature of AIDS and the ways of transmition and prevention.

RESULTS: The survey rsults showed that the level of knowledge about AIDS in 51.3 percent sampls was moderate. Girls konwledge was lower than boys (p<0.001)Between knowledge and age and level of education was no significant correlation. The relation between level of knowledge and course of education (p<0.0001),place of life or education (p<0.0001),parents education and source of information about AIDS,was significant. The source of information included:65 percent TV,1.5 percent health center personels and in 5.5 percent teachers.

CONCLUSIONS: This level of knowlege about AIDS is't desirable and we must wok more and more in this field.
