BACKGROUND: Metabolic complications of indinavir, such as lipodystrophy or hyperlipidemia, are rare in Koreans. We evaluated whether the pharmacokinetic parameters of indinavir in Koreans and Caucasians differ. Materials and
METHODS: Indinavir 800 mg was administered orally to eight healthy male Koreans and four healthy male Caucasians. Indinavir levels in serum were quantified using liquid-liquid extraction followed by high performance liquid chromatography with UV detection. Parameters such as AUC (area under the concentration-time curve), Cmax (maximum concentration in plasma), Tmax (time to reach maximum plasma concentration), or T1/2 (half life) in the two populations were compared.
RESULTS: Plasma concentrations of indinavir were similar in both groups. No significant differences were observed in the pharmacokinetic parameters of indinavir in Koreans and Caucasians.
CONCLUSIONS: The pharmacokinetic parameters of indinavir in Koreans were similar to those of Caucasians in this small-scale study. Further study upon the metabolic complications of indinavir is needed in these two ethnic groups. [table: see text]
