BACKGROUND: There has been reported about the prevalence of hepatitisCvirus (HCV) and hepatitis B virus(HBV)in Cameroon. HCV antIbody tets have been reported to miss as much as 39% of HCV infections in prson co-infected with HIV. In this study, to know HIV whether HIV infection can influence onthe infection of HBV or HCV, we investigated the prevalence of HBV and HCV among HIV-positive and HIV-negative patients in Cameroon. Subjects and
METHODS: Plasma of 637 hospitalized patients aged from 15 to 87in remote village of the equatorial rainforets of Cameroon. Was screened for anti-HIV antibodies with AxSYMHIV-1/HIV2(Microparticle EIA, Abbott Laboratories)and Determine HIV-1/2(Immuno-chromatography,Abbott Laboratories). Hepatitis B surface antigen(HBsAg)was tested with HCVPHAkit( third generationpassive hemoagglutination test,Abbott,Japan).
RESULTS: Out of the 637 patients, 323(50.7%),51(8.0%)and 97(15.2%) were positive for HIV Ab,HBsAg and HCV Ab, respectively. While prevalence of HBV was significantly higherin HIV-positive patients(10.5%; 34/323) than in HIV-ngative ones(5.4%; 17/314)(p=0.026), prevalence of HCV was significantly lower in HIV-positive patients(12.1%;39/323) than in HIv-negative ones (18.5%;58/314)(p=0.033). Two patients were triply infected with HIV,HBV and HCV, and patient was dually infected with HBV and HCV.
CONCLUSION: These results suggest that HIV infection can be a co-factor for HBV infection, but that HCV infection may occur independently infectipon in Cameroon
