BACKGROUND: Cutaneous manifestations are the most common features in HIV positive patients. In many cases the skin findings helps to detect earliest sign of HIV disease. Depending on the degree of immunosuppression and the nature of the lesions, there is a variation in the spectrum of CD4 counts. The main objective of our study was to observe various Cutaneous lesions in HIV positive patients with a CD4 count of less than 100 cells/microL.
METHODS: Twelve HIV positive patients with different mucocutaneous manifestations were studied. Detail history, clinical examination, and CD4 count were carried out. All twelve patients had a count less than 100.
RESULTS: Out of 12 cases, 3 had multidermatomal, haemorrhagic herpes zoster, 3 had oral candidiasis, 1 had Cutaneous leishmaniasis with giant mollusci, 1 had giant and extensive verruca vulgaris, 1 had genital tuberculosis (tuberculous ulcer vulva), 1 had hairy Leucoplakia, 1 had Norwegian scabies and 1 had Kaposi's sarcoma.
CONCLUSIONS: HIV infected individuals with a very low CD4 count present with severe mucocutaneous lesions requiring more aggressive management and long term follow up.
