BACKGROUND: HIV has come out with a varied manifestation affecting the young adults in India. It mainly gets transmitted heterosexually. The attitude of the person towards the sex is the main cause. Therefore the sexual behavior & occurrence of HIV are related to each other. This has been tested in the urban / semi urban population in India. However there was no data available of such a occurrence in rural areas. Therefore we tried to find out the relation between the STI & HIV in rural population.
METHOD: Randomly selected 100 males 100 female adults were tested for the presence of STI and also for HIV. The STI that were looked for include gonorrhea. Chlamydia by Syphilis by VDRL Test & Trichomonas by Culture.
RESULTS: Out of 200 cases 4(2%) samples were reactive for VDRL. No cases of gonorrhea and Chlamydiae were detected. Eight cases (4%) were positive for Trichomonas. Of the 12 cases of STI 4(48%) were sero-positive for HIV and another 2 did not have any STI.
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of STI in the rural area is around 6%, prevalence of HIV is 3%. So the incidence is very low as compared to urban population. Data from other centers show similar results. So the actual incidence of HIV among STI cases needs to be analysed among rural and urban populations. Data from other sources have shown the similar results.
