Muslims response to HIV/AIDS.

Int Conf AIDS 2004 Jul 11-16; 15:(abstract no. A10055)

Muslim Action Against AIDS, Ipaja LAgos, Nigeria

ISSUES: Most Muslim scholars believe that providing adequate Islamic knowledge is the most effective way of halting the alarming rate of spread of HIV/AIDS. It is a known fact that we are losing the battle against the dreadful disease and it is a collective fight. The old method of HIV/AIDS prevention is A B + C while the Muslim proposed an acronym of "ISA: Islamic Stop AIDS". This is an approach that never contravenes to the belief and morality. The issue of AIDS is more than moral, spiritual and economy. It is a wholistic polemic that is affecting the world in large dimension.

DESCRIPTION: This research work will be designed to integrate Islamic approach to already existing model of HIV/AIDS prevention. The approach will be readily acceptable in the Muslim dominated areas, it will equally provide a ready instrument or tools for other non-Muslim NGOs working in a Muslim dominated area. This research is based on personal experience in the field.

LESSONS LEARNED: The presentation of Islamic preventive measures against HIV/AIDS in Muslim community has led to some clear and effective ways to access, educate and support for people living with AIDS and also as a preventive measure for people negative to AIDS, PNA.

RECOMMENDATIONS: This research will recommend the adaptation and integration of alternative Islamic AIDS prevention measure for Muslim NGO and unIslamic NGO towards collective battling against AIDS.
