Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 infection of neural cells involves a chemokine receptor dependent but CD4 indpendent entry.
Int Conf AIDS 2002 Jul 7-12; 14:(abstract no. A10001)
Alvarez S, Canto-Nogues C, Munoz-Fernandez MA; Hospital General Univ Gregorio Maranon, Madrid, Spain
These results support an independent CD4 viral infection in neural cells and a role of HS in facilitating the interaction of chemokines with the cell surface and the consequent inhibition of HIV-1 infection. Our findings suggest a model in which initial interaction between a virion component, probably cyclophylin A, and/or gp120 to HS, is followed by binding to CCR5 or CXCR4 to internalize the virus. This would explain why the infection is so greatly inhibited by HS being chemokines able to potentiate this effect.

HIV envelope can exploit very low levels of CCR5 to fuse with resting CD4+ T cells.
Int Conf AIDS 2002 Jul 7-12; 14:(abstract no. A10002)
Chanel C, Staropoli I, Baleux F, Valenzuela-Fernandez A, Amara A, Virelizier JL, Arenzana-Seisdedos F, Altmeyer R; Institut Pasteur, Paris, France
We conclude that minute amounts of funtional CCR5 are present on resting CD4+ T cells. HIV has the capacity to exploit very low levels of the CCR5 receptor to directly enter CD4+ T lymphocytes ultimately leading to the creation of a treatment-resistant reservoir of latently infected cells.

Correlation of Syncytium Inducing (SI)-/ Non Syncytium Inducing (NSI)-phenotype and HIV-1 sequences from different genes.
Int Conf AIDS 2002 Jul 7-12; 14:(abstract no. A10003)
Nolden T, Beerenwinkel N, Kupfer B, Selbig J, Hoffmann D, Daeumer MP, Sierra Aragon S, Schneweis KE, Rockstroh JK, Pfister H, Kaiser R; Institut fuer Virologie der Universitaetsklinik, Koeln, Germany
We did not only find the expected strong correlation between amino acid composition of the V3 region and the different in vitro phenotypes, but also a significant correlation between vpu sequences and the SI and NSI phenotype. Variations in vif and vpr sequences did not show any such correlation suggesting a role in the cytopathic effect for both gp120 and vpu.

Hansens disease and its association with other infections in a third world country.
Int Conf AIDS 2002 Jul 7-12; 14:(abstract no.. A10004)
Kamalapuram KN;;; Co-lepra, New Delhi, India
Two hundred and seventy six patients in the age group of 18 to 60 years and 233 control persons residing in the matched environment were included.Of the 276 serum samples from HD patients, none showed seropositivive for AIDS antibody. Also, none of the control samples was tested positive for AIDS antibody. However, we found 13.2% HD patients had associated pulmonary TB infection.Several of the HD patients were tested positive for syphilis and Australia Antigen. Sexual behaviour in Hansens Disease patients and in control subjects were studies. Implications of our findings shall be discussed.

Distribution of the CCR5 gene 32 base pair deletion and CCR5 expression in Chinese minorities.
Int Conf AIDS 2002 Jul 7-12; 14:(abstract no. A10005)
Feng T, Ni AP, Irving H, Cohen MS; Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Beijing, China
This pilot study shows the Dai minority may have a greater CCR-5 dependent susceptibility to HIV acquisition compared to the other minorities investigated. Because of this added risk factor, special prevention resources should be focused on this minority. Further studies of the biological risk in the Dai community is warranted.

Chemokine receptor polymorphisms in Mexican individuals exposed to HIV but non infected.
Int Conf AIDS 2002 Jul 7-12; 14:(abstract no. A10006)
Fuentes Romero Luis Leon FR, Rodriguez Diaz Roberto Alejandro RD, Viveros Rogel Monica VR, Huante Perez Alberto HP, Gonzalez Solis Edna GS, Leon Garcia Daniel LG, Anaya Rodriguez Francisco Javier AR, Rivera Lecona Maria Elena RL, Soto Ramirez Luis Enrique SR; Instituto Nacional Ciencias Medicas y Nutricion Salvador Zubiran, Distrito Federal, Mexico
In Mexican ENIs Δ32 deletion of CCR5-gene do not explain protection against HIV infection as in the caucasian population. Absence of Δ32 deletion in this population is correlated with its low frequency in the Mexican general population in contrast with caucasian individuals (allelic frecuency 0.015% vs 5% respectively). These result emphasize the racial differences in protection factors for HIV infection. Women had more risk to be infected with HIV than men because they were exposed for longer periods without any kind of protection, even though they knew the serological status of their couple. These social habits should be eradicated.

Frequency of sdf-1 utr801-a in distinct brazilian populations.
Int Conf AIDS 2002 Jul 7-12; 14:(abstract no. A10007)
Grimaldi RS, Acosta AX, Argollo MC, Galvao-Castro B; Laboratorio Avancado de Saude Publica - Centro de Pesquisas Goncalo Moniz - Fundacao Oswaldo Cruz, Salvador, Brazil
In fact, our results are in accordance with the literature data, that shows a homogeneous distribution of the 801-A allele, being more prevalent in Caucasians. Despite the predominance of black people in Salvador population, the results revealed a higher value of the mutant allele than expected, probably due to a Caucasian mixture. We showed part of the results of an extending research that studies the genetics factors involved with resistance to AIDS.

Polymorphism of CCR5, CCR2 and CCR5 Promoter on HIV-1infection in a cohort from Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Int Conf AIDS 2002 Jul 7-12; 14:(abstract no.. A10008)
Rigato PO, Hong MA, Casseb JS, Araujo RN, Araujo PF, Bueno AG, Ueda M, Orii NM, Duarte AJ; School of Medicine of University of Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, Brazil
Our data are very similar to those previously reported in Brazil, Europe, Asia and Africa. Genetic polymorphism of coreceptors seems to play some role on the disease progression as have been shown previously in Caucasian.

Exposure of neutralization epitope on recombinant HIV-1 envelope glycoproteins expressed in BHK-21, HeLa or primary mouse cells.
Int Conf AIDS 2002 Jul 7-12; 14:(abstract no. A10009)
Rolland K, Brand D, Barin F; D3M, Virology Laboratory, Medicine School, Tours, France
These results support evidence that the cell line used for the protein expression can modify exposure of the neutralizing epitopes and the CD4 binding site on the HIV-1 envelope. These data must be considered when immunogenicity of HIV vaccine candidates based on recombinant envelope proteins is evaluated.

V3 Antibodies and Heteroduplex Mobility Assay results in HIV-1 Infected Individuals from Venezuela.
Int Conf AIDS 2002 Jul 7-12; 14:(abstract no. A10011)
Castro E, Bongertz V, Deibis L, Morgado M, Echeverria de Perez G; Instituto de Inmunologia, Universidad Central de Venezuela, Caracas, Venezuela
These results show a higher recognition of B virus circulating in our area by V3Bbr and V3Fbr peptides that by V3B. Such observation could be related to the presence of mosaic genomes among the env B population viruses. This assumption would be consistent with CRF12 _BF previous descriptions in our region and also in Venezuela.

HIV envelope-induced cell death requires coreceptor expression and gp41 function.
Int Conf AIDS 2002 Jul 7-12; 14:(abstract no. A10012)
Blanco J, Barretina J, Clotet B, Este JA; Fundacio irsiCaixa, Hosp. Germans Trias i Pujol, 08916 BADALONA, Spain
Our data show that CD4 expression is not sufficient to render a cell sensitive to cell-surface Env-induced apoptosis. X4 and R5 Env induce cell death by a gp41 dependent mechanism that requires the interaction of gp120 with CD4 and the appropriate coreceptor.

Heath LE, Tanzer F, Bandawe G, Shephard EG, Hanke T, Rybicki EP; Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, University of Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa
BACKGROUND: Considerable evidence exists that support earlier speculation that a strong CD8+T lymphocyte (CTL) response is crucial for the control of HIV infection. The effectiveness of a multi-CTL epitope immunogen (HIVA) designed to elicit a strong HIV CTL response has clearly been demonstrated in several animal mode

Persistence of HIV-specific T cells and soluble suppressive factors in Highly Exposed Persistently Seronegative (HEPS) women married to HIV-infected men in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Duerr A, Promadej N, Butera S, Costello C, Kulkarni P, McNicholl J, Suriyanon V; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, United States
BACKGROUND: We studied innate and HIV-specific immune factors potentially related to resistance in HIV-uninfected (HIV-) wives of HIV-infected (HIV+) men. Unlike commercial sex workers whose true exposure to HIV is unknown, the HIV exposure of these women was well documented. METHODS: 18 HEPS women were selected from a

Correlation between breadth of memory HIV-specific cytotoxic T cells, viral load and disease progression in HIV infection.

Chouquet C, Autran A, Gomard E, Bouley JM, Calvez V, Katlama C, Costagliola D, Riviere Y; Inserm SC4, Paris 13, France
BACKGROUND: Memory cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) should play a key role in controlling HIV. The correlations between the breadth and specificities of memory CTL and virus production and disease progression are still unknown, but are of major importance for vaccine strategies. Methods and Design: 148 chronically-infecte

AIDS myelodysplasia: molecular homology between HIV NEF and CD 133, a marker of bone marrow immature hematopoietic progenitor stem cells and retinal cells.

Tran MK, Maurrisson G, Caprani A, Richert A, Kirkiacharian S, Nguyen DX; University Paris 11, Chatenay- Malabry, France
Backgroung: HIV infection is characterized by myelodysplasia stigmates such as anemia, leukopenia and thrombocytopenia. HIV-1 non progressors are defective in NEF (Xu XY, 2000). Calenda V. (1994) described a deleterious action of HIV-1 NEF on bone marrow CD 34+ hematopoietic progenitor cell culture. This CD 34+ stem ce

Smith RW; Institute for Postgraduate Interdisciplinary Studies, Palo Alto, CA 94306-0846, United States
ISSUES: Since 1984, there have been numerous speculations about potential vaccines against HIV and/or in AIDS. A variety of approaches have been cited and now attempted, though all without success. Increasingly, investigators are challenging taken-for-granted assumptions about the feasibility or appropriateness of curr

Corneal transplantation in a patient with AIDS.

Vincenti A, Meini M, Donati C, Ferretti P, Scasso A; Infectious diseases Department, Lucca, Italy
In spite of many advances in organ transplantation, the presence of HIV in a patient has always been considered a controindication for transplantation. Since 1997, the highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has been shown to be associated with significant stabilization of CD4+count and lower mortality; as a resul
