BACKGROUND: The treatment and assistance of HIV/AIDS patients in the State of Rio de Janeiro has been gradually increased in respect to the Anti-retroviral (ARV) drugs provision; the protease inhibitors efficacy confirmation and the potential of the associated use of drugs. These events lead to a greater demand of medical and laboratory assistance and the availability of ARV drugs in the Public Health Departments; that require improvement of the logistics distribution controls, in order to ensure for both new admittances, as well as for the proper continuity of previous AIDS patients. The positive results obtained shows the accomplishments and advancement of the drug distribution and logistics system of the STD/AIDS Coordination of the State of Rio de Janeiro Health Department.
METHODS: The State STD/AIDS Program logistics department, aims to control HIV/AIDS treatment drugs dispensation, stocks and purchasing procedures. The logistic control responds to all of the prescriptions presented by the patients and to guarantee an immediate stock replacement in the State of Rio de Janeiro. The State level STD/AIDS department set up norms and regulations to be followed by the certified Municipal Health Programs to include proper and efficient reception, stock and distribution methods, and monthly reporting statistics, to which all of the certified municipalities must strictly comply. RESULTS/
CONCLUSIONS: Beginning in 1998, the Program has been developing a closer approach between the medical and administrative segments, has improved the assistance to the patient and their relationship with the treatment units, contributing to an increase of 64% in the number of patients attending treatment in the period of 1999-2001. Furthermore, the opportunity to be trained and supervised by the State STD/AIDS Program resulted in the establishment of 26 new health centers going from 83centers in 1998 to 109 in 2001.
