HIV intervention for working class.

ISSUES: It is not always easy to reach out to workers especially those whose staff strength runs into thousands or with many branch offices. After several attempts, we lately decided to train the management of these big companies, who will in turn organize mini educational programs for the workers. For us to reach every employee in a company, we at Movement Against AIDS/STDs & Poverty [MAIDS], Ibadan chose to educate these groups on HIV through a book written by me on AIDS titled "AIDS: AWARENESS THROUGH INFORMATION" The book combined prevention and care, with illustrations on every question about condom, STDs and on strategic interventions to reduce the HIV spread in the global community.

DESCRIPTION: Between June and December 2001 over 20,000 copies of the above named book were sold to several companies such as Wema Bank Plc, Lagos for the education of their staff that are spread all over Nigeria. The rationale behind this initiative is to enable the ever busy workers have access to HIV/AIDS education during their private moments, and the best medium, through our research is by book. Each of these 20,000 books we estimated would be read by at least 10 people within 6 months, meaning over 200,000 people had been educated through the book in the last 6 months. LESSONS LEARNT: With the goemetric cases of HIV in Nigeria, the book has helped us to reach one of the hard-to-get sector of the population. Another indicator for success was the bulk of mails received from various readers containing mainly of how they could set up a small program on HIV in their areas. RECOMMENDATION: Since book travels farther than the author or the first reader, it is hereby recommended that this type of intervention should be adopted by other organizations to reach busy populations in their regions.
