HIV testing behavior and sexual risk behaviors among out-of-treatment drug users in Long Beach, California.

BACKGROUND: To explore the relationship between HIV testing behaviors and sexual risk behaviors, including lack of condom use, in a sample of out-of-treatment drug users in Long Beach, California.

METHODS: A community-based sample of 315 drug users was recruited from an HIV prevention setting. All interviews were conducted in 2001.

RESULTS: For Woman: Lifetime number of HIV tests was significantly smaller for women who had unprotected vaginal sex in the last 30 days (M = 6.20, SD=5.4) compared to those who did not have recent unprotected vaginal sex (M=9.33, SD=8.7), t(98)=2.21, p=.03. Men: Ever having given sex to get drugs was associated with having a recent HIV test (~(1)=6.39, p=.011). Men who had given sex to get drugs had a higher mean number of HIV tests (M=8.04, SD=6.87) compared to men who had never given sex to get drugs (M=5.36, SD=9.17), t(249)=2.51, p=.012. Men who had unprotected oral sex in the last 30 days had a higher mean number of lifetime HIV tests (M=7.43, SD=8.89) than men who did not have recent unprotected oral sex (M=3.58, SD=5.67), t(249)=2.96, p=.0034). Black men gave money for sex significantly more times (M=2.53, SD=4.48) than White (M=.56, SD=1.92) or Hispanic men (M=.50, SD=.836), F(2)=3.19, p=.045. Black men also had fewer lifetime HIV tests (M=5.00, SD=4.63) compared to all other men (M=7.40, SD=10.03), t(249)=2.50, p=.013.

CONCLUSIONS: HIV testing for women is associated with unprotected vaginal sex. For men, it is associated with trading sex for drugs, having unprotected oral sex, and Black race/ethnicity.
