ISSUE: The epidemic outbreak of HIV is not seen as a priority problem by the low social-economy classes. It is necessary to get rid of these taboos. Project: OPALS FES, an NGO that fights against AIDS, worked hand by hand with women development NGO ( UAF). OPALS FES integrated its prevention strategy into the UAF literacy process, located in a highly populated area in the city of Fes. OPALS FES has organized, with the technical help of AMSED (PASA/SIDA program), several periods of participative prevention for bringing to light the importance of the HIV issue, through the subjects of discussion suggested by the beneficiaries. This project is also focused on the training of relay-persons (mediators) in the UAF (literacy monitors or voluntary beneficiaries) for the extension of this program.

RESULTS: During these 2 years of partnership (2000-2001), OPALS FES has noticed that the beneficiaries (about 120 women: all ages, married or not) have been convinced of the usefulness of the prevention attitude. They have been familiarized with condoms and their effectiveness. Moreover, UAF wants to extend our partnership. From OPALS FES' perspective, this experience leads to a series of similar projects in a larger scale in the benefit of other NGOs in the metropolitan area. Actual: 4 NGOs (6 groups of beneficiaries: men, women, young people), while accentuating the formation of NGOs' monitors, which are our relay-persons. Training programs are set up for this purpose. Creation of a STD/AIDS detection center is in process with the partnership of the Health Ministry. Thus, people will be familiarized with the HIV issue.

CONCLUSION: Two essential points have to be highlighted: - Importance of the action with peers as mediators. - Adjust information and prevention to the respective audience, by adopting this methodology we can better imply effective behavior changes.
