METHODS: During 1998-1999 the sentinel surveillance, based on the voluntary confidential unassociated anonymous testing of HIV antibodies at the residual blood in syringes and needles, was conducted in Odessa and Poltava towns. Sentinels groups of 250 persons were selected in each town. The investigations were spent with the purpose of study of efficiency of the preventive programs (Harm Reduction) among IDUs.
RESULTS: The studies show that the prevalence of HIV-infection among IDUs in Odessa is 53.7%; in Poltava - 27.7% (first investigation) and 37.8% (second investigation after 6 month). These data reflect the prevalence of HIV-infection among those IDUs, who interact with Project.
CONCLUSION: The received results have appeared unexpected for the researchers, as the established level of HIV-prevalence in some times exceeded the data of official statistics in cities, where the Harm Reduction programs were already introduced. It testifies to necessity of activization of introduction of the preventive programs for vulnerable groups, firstly among IDUs.
