ISSUES: This action research project was established to research and develop health education interventions for men who use sex on premises venues (saunas, bathhouses and backrooms). The project consisted of three phases including research and development, trial of education strategies and evaluation of education strategies.
DESCRIPTION: The project was a collaborative partnership between community-based educators, social researchers and men who use sex on premises venues. Educational research and development focused on four key areas: Venue differentiation - responding to the specificity of sex on premises venues and the differences between them.; Experiential knowledges - working with knowledges of venue cultures, practices and usage that are acquired experientially. Initiation processes - exploring processes of initiation into venue cultures, practices and usage as opportunities for education.; Corporeal negotiations - investigating educational interventions that engage corporeal (non-verbal) modes of communicating, negotiating and relating.
CONCLUSIONS: The outcomes of the project included improvements in the effectiveness of community based health education interventions around sex on premises venues, and improvements in the health literacy of men who use sex on premises venues. Interventions included a non-language based photographic installation depicting experiences in sex on premises venues, a workshop and a booklet for new initiates, and glow in the dark condom dispensers. Members of the target group informed the development of all interventions.
