OBJECTIVE: To improve home based care delivery to AIDS patients by implementing a training programme facilitated by people living with AIDS.

METHOD: A training package on home based care based on the WHO- care model was adopted for use. Ten (10) PWAs of mixed gender were recruited and trained as facilitators to facilitate during a two day training workshop for home based workers. The facilitators were equipped with were equipped with skills like presentation techniques, home based care techniques and information, group dynamics and general information on HIV/AIDS.

RESULTS: The participants readily understood the emotional and psychological experiences of their target group through the sharing of experiences and role-plays. They also had an insight into psychosocial driven issues relating to positive individuals. This led to a more quality driven care of AIDS patients by the trained group. The training also led to development of confidence in care and the participants could easily put themselves in the position of their potential clients.

CONCLUSION: HIV positive clients are always disempowered by care professionals. The training package provides a method of empowering positive individuals through their role as training facilitators. The participants are able to provide better quality care through a comprehensive understanding of their physical and psychological status.
