OBJECTIVES: To measure the effects of the study medication (AZT/3TC versus AZT/3TC/ddI) on the QoL of the patients, to determine if these effects on QoL are different in the two study arms, and to evaluate the influence this (possible) change in QoL has on medication intake.

DESIGN: Prospective study.

METHODS: As QoL assessment in the context of clinical trials is still very uncommon in Thailand, an instrument that measures health related QoL in a Thai population has not been developed yet. We therefore compared the MOS-HIV 2.1 questionnaire with the WHO-QOL questionnaire that was developed for a general Thai population. We found that they showed sufficient overlap to decide to use the MOS-HIV 2.1 questionnaire in our study. 86 patients of at least 16 years of age with CD4+ cell counts between 100 and 500/mm and without opportunistic infection or disease take part in the study for a period of 48 weeks. QoL measurements are at the baseline visit and at week 24 of the study. RESULTS AND

CONCLUSIONS: The questionnaires of the second measurement are being filled out by the patients in January and Februari of this year. It is too early to discuss results and conclusions here.
