OBJECTIVE: To study the distribution in different organs of HHV-8 in AIDS-KS patients.
METHODS: Autopsy specimens of various organs from 5 AIDS-KS patients and 6 AIDS patients without KS were collected. DNA were extracted from paraffin sections. PCR was performed in solution containing TAQ, TAQ buffer, dNTP and primer pair specific for HHV-8. PCR products were analyzed by Southern blot hybridization with internal probe.
RESULTS: (table: see text) On the other hand, total 50 samples from various organs from AIDS patients without KS show negative for HHV-8 by PCR.
CONCLUSION: Our results showed that HHV-8 could be detected in several organs such as lymph nodes, lung, stomach, spleen, prostate, esophagus and rectum. Since most of these organs in which HHV-8 could be detected are the organs in which KS often occur, the possible relationship of HHV-8 in the pathogenesis of KS is further suggested.
