The School without Walls (SWW) was developed by the Southern African AIDS Training (SAT) Programme with funding from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) as a training mechanism. SWW aims to help strengthen the AIDS response capacity of community organisations by providing opportunities for the exchange of hands-on knowledge between newer community-based groups and those with longer or more extensive experience in programming. School without Walls facilitates project-based training exchanges during which the "eye-witness" experience of visiting an established community-based AIDS group or groups becomes the centerpiece of a training course. The courses include briefing and debriefing trainees in a workshop format. SWW is an exercise in collaboration and sharing an experience between community AIDS groups, promoting and exchanging ideas and open to participants from all the countries of the region. The emphasis is on organisation-to-organisation learning. Trainees are matched to host organisations and/or site visits, and participate in evaluating their training activities. Trainees can also learn project management and monitoring techniques, financial management and computer skills, fundraising and networking for the purpose of institutional capacity building and sustainability. The success of SWW will be measured by the new or improved AIDS programmes and/or community organisations which result, and by the increased capacity of the organisations it has helped to strengthen.
