OBJECTIVE: To determine the social and demographic characteristics of women visiting and ATC. Method: Persons visiting an ATC situated in a business locality of Bombay, established since Sept. 1994 were interviewed & tested for HIV- & VDRL. The Socio-demographic characterstics of the women attending ATC from April 95 to Dec. 95 are presented.

RESULTS: The women formed 14% of the total individuals tested at ATC. Elisa Test was performed on 126 & western Blot test on 19 women. About 44% were in the age group of 13 to 25 years (youth) - Around 50% had been educated up to Secondary School level while 26% were illiterate. 55% were unemployed while about 25% were gainfully employed. Only 4% of these were CSWS. 62% were married & only 10% had knowledge regarding HIV transmission while 6% had knowledge about all sexually transmitted diseases. 5% admitted to having multiple sexual partners. 3% informed that they took care to use condoms everytime.

CONCLUSIONS: Even among women it is the younger age group which is associated with HIV & STD transmission. Occupation & per capita income does not seem to have any bearing on the prevalence of HIV among women. Education up to high school level does not seem to provide the necessary information for the prevention of STD & HIV infection. Data regarding sexuality is very difficult to obtain from women. The information gathered from the above study can be utilized for planning the future activities of the ATC as well as interventional programmes for IEC & prevention of HIV & STD transmission in women.
