OBJECTIVES: Evaluating and enhancing the impact of sex education in HIV/AIDS prevention among teenagers.

METHOD: From January 1993 to July 1993 300 teenagers (67% female, 33% male; aged 12-20) from the Harare district participated in seminars and workshops on sexual health. The courses comprised 3 stages, (i) KAP baseline survey, (ii) identification, development and dissemination of appropriate sexual health messages (iii) discussion with teenagers on safe sex and HIV/AIDS education.

RESULTS: As 97% of the teenage participants admitted having acquired new knowledge on sexual health through these seminars and workshops, the latter enhanced knowledge on HIV/AIDS and ways to prevent it.

CONCLUSION: Seminars and workshops as forums at which teenagers receive sex education for HIV/AIDS prevention should continue as an on-going exercise locally, regionally and nationally. In view of the sexual vulnerability of the members of this age group sex education can be effectively used to fight HIV/AIDS.
