OBJECTIVE: To show a new possible theoretical for checking the efficacy of HIV-counselling and psychotherapy in persons who attend to get the HIV serologic test result, in the infectious diseases unit of a general hospital. METHODOLOGY AND DEVELOPMENT: SAS' scheme: S means the patient's HIV related situation when he enters the counselling arrangement. It includes 1) Biological status (HIV reactive or not; with or without symptoms), 2) Behavioural complex (psychological features that may be non-related with the clinical stage; it places the disease progression in a psychological sense), 3) Social model (psychological setting). A means: the ego's action for getting the adjustment to the HIV situation. Adjustment = coping with AIDS capacity. S' means: adjustment has been achieved and the person has modified initial S successfully. The SAS' sequence is the aim of HIV-counselling and/or psychotherapy. So, there would be patients in SA (adjustment disorder); SAS' (achieved adjustment); SAS' (qualified adjustment through the sublimation of HIV status: writing, becoming an AIDS activist; fighting against AIDS, etc)

CONCLUSIONS: 1 This new model allow to unify the features of different groups who are working in this field, under a unique scheme of standardization. 2 It allows multiple variable inclusions in an easy and flexible formula. 3 It's open to the adding of quantitative factors to get an effective counselling rating scale.
