PURPOSE: Ten countries of Eastern and Central Africa are decimated by AIDS. One of the tragic results of the epidemic on families and society at large are orphans who are multiplying daily by droves as their youthful parents succumb to the epidemic. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. Old folks of the traditional extended family that take care of orphans are slowly dying out of natural death. Material resources are drying out. Even if outside interventions focused on providing short-term assistance were available today, it is not to last forever. Short-term assistance has mainly covered the following needs, according to needs assessment studies by UOA (2) Short-term needs according to needs assessment study. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. UKIMWI Orphans Assistance (UOA) demonstrates a community-based action that emphasizes long-term programs aimed at program self-reliance. These programs include 3) Long term material needs 82.4% of households require assistance to establish income generating activities: the program backbone, 25.8% "households need to rehabilitate orphans' small farms for food, and coffee for cash crops, 18.5% "households request to rehabilitate of rebuild orphans' houses CONCLUSION: UOA-Tanzania demonstrates the trend that is prevalent in grassroots activities, Although people are concerned with alleviating actual pressing needs of children, they are, however, intent on building permanent programs that can ensure the future of their children. Therefore assistance from outside should also follow that trend.
