DNA sequence analysis of cloned HTLV-III proviruses reveals an organization of the genome unusual for retroviruses. While the gag and pol genes exhibit relatively little variation in organization as compared to HTLV-I, the 3' end of the genome is markedly different from that of HTLV-I. It is likely that the novel potential products of this region may account for the unusual features of the HTLV-III virus, such as trans-activation of its long terminal repeat, cytopathicity, etc.
