PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Treatments for HIV/AIDS continue to have a prevalence of associated adverse events (AE) and side-effects (SE) that negatively impact on the adherence, quality of life of patients and health of affected people. We need to improve the reporting, knowledge and spread of information to doctors and patients using a range of processes.

GUIDELINES AND BEST PRACTICES: Assessment of needs to predict, avoid and manage SE and AE for the community; research, phase 4 clinical trials, cohorts.

QUESTIONS ON THE RELEVANCE OF: gender, age, children, drug use, ethnicity and on specific medical conditions; co-infections and morbidities. Can we improve the prediction of AE and SE based on individual or group characteristics and on different medical conditions? The crucial role of patients and patient organisations as stakeholders, with researchers, pharmaceutical industry, doctors and related public health institutions, to respond to existing problems and to increase patient literacy and preparedness for existing and newer treatments must be emphasised.
