[ABSTRACT:] Objectives: To study clinical and biological evolution for patients under antiretroviral treatment, to assess their medication tolerance and to estimate survival for patients under treatment who are being followed up at Day Care Centre.

Methodology: We have achieved a retrospective study taking into account the medical files of patients under antiretroviral treatment from April 2002 to January 2003. The treatment evolution has been appreciated according to: weight, Karnofsky index, opportunistic diseases impact, secondary effects emergence causing cessation of treatment, CD4 rating, patients survival (data analysis on Epi Info 6.04c).

Results: 49 patients average age of the patients: 40.6 ±10.8 (extremes: 15–67 years old) have received antiretroviral treatment: 32 protocols including one protease inhibitor (65.3%) versus 17 including one non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (34.7%). The patient weight has increased on an average of 4.5 kg, and Karnovsky index has risen to 9.2% between Day 1 and M 6. Opportunistic diseases impact fell in a proportion of 68%. The CD4 average rate fell from 97.4 ±97.3 CD4/mm (extremes 1–374 CD4/mm3) at the beginning of the treatment to 215.6 ±139.3 CD4/mm3 after 6 months’ treatment. Average profit ascertained was +118.3 CD4/mm3. The percentage of patients having less than 50 CD4/mm3 fell from 44.9% at the beginning of the treatment to 4.1 at the end of the 6 M. Seven cases of side effects have been recorded, leading to a change in the treatment procedures. Side effects recorded: disabling peripheral neuropathy, acute pancreatitis, digestive disorders. One decease has been recorded. We had not lost sight of any patient. Survival rate reached 98%.

Conclusions: This study demonstrates a satisfactory evolution for patients under antiretroviral treatment. The good tolerance and efficiency recorded can be likened with those made on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean or in other parts of Africa.
