Question:

I work from home on the internet and It takes up pretty much my entire life. I want to work for Comedy central and I am a "starving artist" so to speak. I contracted AIDS 4 years ago and I cannot afford the medication, and my family does not know. The problem is that I sit so much online that I have developed these draining, infected pressure sores on my coccyz and buttocks & even one on the bottom of my scrotum, which has now scabbed over. Could you give me some instructions on how to care for these? Are they what is causing me to be so emaciated?

Answer provided by:

John Barrow, M.D.

You cannot treat these problems by asking someone on line. You must seek medical attention.

If your problems are as terrible as you describe, you should go to an emergency room and have these ulcerated lesions cared for correctly. Should they become infected with staph, it could be terrible.

You should also get care for your HIV infection. Left uncontrolled, HIV will continue to wreak havoc on your immune system. Dramatic weight loss could be a sign that things are getting worse. You do not want to get any AIDS related pneumonia. They will dramatically compromise your heath, further.

At this time, you are at a point where taking care of your HIV infection can make your life long and normal. If you fail to do this, you could face severe illness and debilitation. You have dreams. Treating this disease is a step towards realizing them.
