I have HIV, what can I do to protect my family and friends from receiving transmission of the virus ? Can HIV become transmitted through daily living with my family and what precautions should I take? What info do my family and friends need to know for their own well being?
I gather that this is a new HIV diagnosis for you. Take it easy. Life with HIV has some challenges, but if you can manage them, you'll find that your life is great.
One thing you do not need to worry about is casual or household transmission of HIV. HIV is spread by sexual contact, the birthing process, and IV drugs.
It is not spread by sharing bathrooms, cleaning dishes, hugging, a friendly kiss, or any normal household activities.
If you have a spouse or significant other, that person needs to know now about safer sex.
For the rest of your family, because they are at NO risk, they need to know what you are comfortable with telling them.
It might be good for you all to go to an HIV service organization near you, or look at information here on AEGIS, together, so that you are all comfortable with the information you get.
Good luck!
