The questions you bring up are important, and indeed, each work chapters in a book! We refer you to a website from San Francisco's Project Inform: http://www.projectinform.org/fs/day1.html which has excellent links to what happens to the immune system, what symptoms may occur, and what longer term issues may arise.

Remember, HIV is basically a treatable condition today, and one day it should be curable as well!
