Question:

Hello Doctors,
My situation is rather unique. I have tested negative out to 15 months on 3 ELISA tests and 2 NAT's. However, I have had a very difficult time accepting these results. I have and am seeking counseling through a psychologist. Unfortunately nothing seems to be working. My wife wants me (wants us) to move on with our lives but I am soooooo afraid to have sex with her out of fear that I might infect her.

My personal physican is aware of my mental state but not to the full degree.

My solution will probably sound impractical but here it goes...

I want to monitor my immune system over the next couple of years via CD4 tests to see if I am losing CD4 cells or to see if there is a trend downward over time. The problem is that I don't know if my doctor will continue to order these test for me every 3 or so months.

How can I order a CD4 test myself without my doctors consent?

The scenario you raise is a difficult one, since it sounds like your anxiety, likely compounded by guilt, has urged to take steps which are not rational. By the tests taken, you do not have HIV! I do not think a physician in good medical practice would get serial T-cells on you given that you are not positive. I would urge you to continue to work with your mental health provider to deal with the huge burden of anxiety and guilt.
