Question:

Doc, I was wondering , if my girlfriend has a PAP test, will the HIV virus show at that time, or does she need to request a differant test?

Answer provided by:

Mark H. Katz, M.D.
Regional HIV/AIDS Physician Coordinator
Kaiser Permanente of Southern California

There is no relationship between a Pap test and HIV (other than the fact that HIV+ women are statistically likely to have certain abnormalities on their Pap smears). The Pap is a completely different test and does not look for HIV. She needs to request a specific test to screen for HIV.
