Dear Doc,
I have been taking Didanosine, Efavirenz and Lamivudine (once a day dosing) since Oct 2004.
I have had no problems with my ARV treatment so far.
My initial CD4 cells count was 201, and I'am HCV+ (AST and ALT levels are within the normal range, no symptoms of liver inflammation).
Since the day before yesterday, I have experienced some symptoms of flu - sore throat, sneezing, elevated body temperature, slight muscle pain. I have to mention that some colleagues from my office experienced flu last week. My questions are the following:
1. Can I take acetylsalicylic acid (Asprin) or any other NSAIL, bearing in mind that I'am on the above mentioned ARV regimen now?
2. What about paracetamol, or any other medication against flu ?
3. Should I take Cotrimoxazol, for preventive purposes, while I have these symptoms ?
Thank you very much for your attention.
Best regards!
I know of no reason why you should not take asprirn or ibuprofen. Drink plenty of fluids. Next year, get a flu shot. Influenza is a bad disease, and all people with HIV should get annual vaccinations. It's important.
Paracetamol is metabolised in the liver, I don't know if there are any contraindications to it's use in people with hepatitis C, but it would not be my first choice.
I would definitely continue to take cotrimoxazole . If your T cell counts continue to rise, you may be able to discontinue it in the future, but I certainly wouldn't do that right now.
Good luck--
JB
