Question:

Is it possible to transmit this disease if you are being treated by anti- AIDS drugs and have yourself no symptoms of the disease?

Answer provided by:

Mark H. Katz, M.D.
Regional HIV/AIDS Physician Coordinator
Kaiser Permanente of Southern California

The degree of viral load of the potential transmitter is one of the major cofactors in determining if someone becomes infected with HIV. Thus, if your viral load is undetectable as a result of the anti-HIV medications, this reduces tremendously the chance you could pass the virus on. HOWEVER, it does not make it impossible, just much lower risk. Safer sex practices should always be adhered to!

Good luck, and glad you are doing so well with your treatments!
