Question:

I want to ask you, can you please tell me what is the treatment for Cryptococcal meningitis, and some relevant information? I had a good friend who had this disease and he lost vision. What is the treatment for that?

He is on triple therapy medicine; Crixivan, Zerit, Videx and amphotericin fungizone. He was on short treatment of difflucan fluconzole. I would be very pleased if any modern therapy is available.

Answer provided by:

John Barrow, M.D.

The usual treatment for Cryptococcus is amphotericin B, which is given until the organism can no longer be grown from samples of spinal fluid. It may be possible to switch to fluconazole afterwards to prevent a recurrence.

If there is damage to the eyes or nerves, only time will tell how much function will be recovered.

Hope this helps.
