Question:

I had a blood transfusion in 1981 and now have AIDS and I am now blind. I was wondering if there are any now drugs out that show any new hope if so, can you let me know?
Thank you very much.

You do not state that you have CMV; however, I guess that we are assuming you do: The advances on the CMV front have been remarkable in the past 10 years. We first had ganciclovir and then foscarnet and then cidofovir. The oral valganciclovir has been approved for several years now too. However, all these drugs can do is to stop the progression of the eye disease and not restore vision in a damaged retina. Once the retina is damaged by CMV that part of it will not see again. There are many helps for the blind now a days but no drug so far can restore sight.
I wish you the best of luck.
