Hello. I had sex about 2 months ago with a person who may be infected. We used a condom, but I don't think it was latex. About 10 days later, I felt the lymph glands in my neck were swollen. I have had other symptoms, such as mild flu, sore throat, muscle pain and swollen lymph glands in the armpits and groin area as well. I am very worried and want to get tested.
Is there a chance I could have something other than HIV? I read that
latex condoms prevent the HIV virus from passing through, but other
condoms may not. Would other types of condoms protect someone against
diseases other than AIDS? If so, am worried that the only thing it could
be is HIV.
Thank you for your help.
There are several types of condoms on the market today. While most are latex, there are also polyurethane condoms and lamb membrane condoms.
Polyurethane condoms offer similar protection to latex. Lamb condoms protect against some STDs, but not reliably against HIV.
Even using condoms, other STDs can be transmitted.
The key here is that HIV does not produce any single reliable clinical symptoms that are diagnostic of HIV infection. The symptoms you describe could be due to any number of pathogens.
You should be tested, if only to set your mind at rest. There is no way to diagnose HIV/AIDS based on history or symptoms. Please get tested! If negative, you will sleep better. If positive, you will have the opportunity to take charge of your health early.
Please let me know your results.
