Abstract: Drug resistance testing is important in evaluating and determining the effectiveness of HIV treatments. Genotypic tests evaluate genetic segments of the virus which correspond to resistance in particular drugs. Phenotypic tests assess the level of drugs needed to stop viral growth. The advantages and disadvantages of both tests are discussed. RNA levels, CD4 counts, and other patient data are still preferred to drug resistance testing as the primary criteria for basing treatment decisions.
