Abstract: Recurring themes at the 38th ICAAC conference were new drugs, new toxicities, renewed immunity, resistance, adherence, and salvage therapy. Speedy and effective treatment for the newly infected was discussed, and diverging opinions were voiced on whether it is best to hit the disease hard and early or defer treatment while waiting for better drugs to be approved. Sessions discussed the link between T-cells and the virus and the weak link between CD4+ counts and viral load response to HAART. Tools for measuring adherence were discussed along with risk factors for poor adherence. Also presented was the prevalence of hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and hyperglycemia. Pharmacokinetic and drug interaction studies with abacavir, amprenavir, and Indinavir are presented. The benefits and drawbacks of genotypic and phenotypic resistance assays are described.
