Abstract: The 6th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections was the largest AIDS scientific meeting of 1999. It provided an overview of the current state of basic and applied medical science related to the disease. Promising drugs are in development, and HIV-specific immunity remains an important area of study. Other major issues discussed included using immunity studies as predictors of response to therapy, problems related to lipodystrophy and other metabolic issues, viral drug resistance, long-term effects of drug therapies, perinatal transmission, and discoveries of new targets for potential drugs.
