Abstract: Progressive immune deficiency arising during HIV disease reflects the continual degradation and the ultimate deletion of immune specificites defined by the CD4(+) T lymphocyte repertoire. Recent evidence suggests that improvements in the immune function of patients with HIV who receive therapy primarily reflects the expansion of CD4(+) T lymphocyte populations present before therapy commenced. These observations have implications for clinical management, therapeutic strategies, and future research.
