Abstract: Viruses use elaborate stratagems to enter cells. The HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein, which mediates both attachment and membrane fusion, has grudgingly begun to yield high-resolution structural information that suggests mechanistic similarities with the hemagglutinin protein of influenza virus.
