Abstract: Glaxo Wellcome has announced a small compassionate use program for its experimental drug, 1592 (abacavir). The program will make 1592 available to 2,500 adults and children in countries where the drug is already in clinical trials. AIDS advocates are concerned that the small size of the program will make 1592 unavailable to many people who have no other treatment options. Glaxo is having difficulties in scaling up the production process, but plans to expand the program soon. Several groups are planning protests, and the text of a 1592 Access Coalition Consensus Letter is included.
