Abstract: A ten-year (1984-1994) retrospective analysis on the incidence of extranodal lymphoma was done at Cook County Hospital (CCH). A total of 378 patients was diagnosed with lymphoma during this period. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was reported in 256 patients, of whom 72 presented as extranodal lymphomas. Data are presented in a table. In the US, primary extranodal lymphomas constitute 25% of all lymphomas. At Cook County Hospital the incidence was 19%. With increasing numbers of AIDS patients, there is a marked increase in the incidence of lymphomas, especially extranodal lymphomas (56%-85%). At CCH 57% of extranodal lymphomas were diagnosed in patients with AIDS. HIV status was highly correlated with primary lymphoma of the brain, nasopharynx and Waldeyer's ring. Overall, there is a low incidence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and extranodal lymphoma at CCH in patients with AIDS. The association of risk factors such as intravenous drug abuse and bisexual behavior versus homosexual behavior might be a cause.
