Abstract: The largest trial ever on AIDS treatment (3,400 volunteers with little or no prior antiviral treatment) reveals that triple drug treatment using saquinavir plus zidovudine (AZT) plus zalcitabine ddC) reduced disease progression or death by fifty percent, compared to AZT plus ddC. Deaths alone were reduced by about 42 percent; however, the result was not quite statistically significant due to the small number of deaths. Those entering the trial had a median CD4 count of approximately 200 and a median viral load of 100,000. Median treatment was 14 months, and median time of follow-up for clinical endpoints was 17 months.
